Years ago, when I worked in R&D at Pfizer... I wanted to be seen as a leader.
I was even receiving really great feedback! And so I asked to be given more strategic roles and work. But it didn't come.
Maybe who I was played into it. I am a woman after all. Who went on maternity leave 3 times. An introvert, quiet and behind the scenes. Asian, known as hard worker, but not as a leader. I also look super young.
I also didn't want to leave. I loved the people I worked with and the amazing brands I worked on.
And so... I created my own outlet for my creative energy.
I had an idea. To create an innovation space, since we lived in cubicle land.
In the end, I was able to secure support from the President, $1.5 mil and half an office floor to completely reconstruct. The first year it opened, over 65 teams used it.
And I wasn't even a director yet! After this... people saw me differently. I received more strategic projects. I was trusted, even when I jumped to a new and different commercial function. I was promoted.
